A Story about a Family Tradition

Ever since I was a child, the beginning of autumn has been associated with the smell of jam, sterilized jars, and the rustling of boxes filled with apples, plums, and tomatoes. Our family had a special tradition—getting together and making preserves.

I remember the aroma of apricot jam filling the house—thick, sweet, and lingering, like the very memory of summer. Or the sizzling of jars of lecho as they were carefully sealed. Heaps of peppers, cucumbers, and tomatoes lined the tables, and we argued over which jam was tastier—strawberry or cherry.

But the most important thing wasn't even the preserves. On those evenings, we were all together. We chatted, shared news, laughed, and sometimes sang old songs. It was already getting dark outside earlier than usual, but the house was so warm and bright that it seemed we weren't afraid of autumn at all.

Years have passed, much has changed, but I still try to keep this tradition alive. Even if the whole family isn't around, I grab a kilogram of apricots and pears and make something small, my own. And as soon as the kitchen smells of cinnamon and sugar, I hear Grandma's laughter again and feel that same feeling of home.

Perhaps it's in such simple rituals that true magic lies: they teach us to be grateful for summer, to cherish its warmth, and to share it with each other. They also remind us that happiness often lies not in big events, but in small jars of jam, neatly lined up on a pantry shelf.

• To clean jewelry, use warm water and mild soap. After cleaning, dry it with a towel
